Highest percentage of children living in poverty found in Nanaimo-Cowichan

The number of children living in poverty in BC is growing, and the BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition has been trying to get politicians to address the problem.

They’re releasing some hard facts to help illustrate the issue, and get people’s attention in the final stretch of the federal campaign.

Provincial Coordinator Adrienne Montani says the data is from 2013, before the federal riding boundaries shifted.

In the old Nanaimo-Alberni riding it was 23.1 per cent, and it was 20.3 in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast.

Montani says they hope candidates take a good look at the numbers, and realize how important it is to take action. She they want all federal parties to commit to a poverty reduction strategy, that goes further than just passing a resolution in the House of Commons.
