City plans to plant new trees at Colliery Dam Park

After removing a swath of trees to make room for the new spillway at Colliery Dam Park, The City of Nanaimo is working on a plan to replace them.

Toby Seward with the City says they’re mapping out a strategy with Golder Associates to plant at least 500 new trees.

Seward says it’s something they were always planning to do, and it’s not a response to concerns over what happened to the trees that were cut down.

Seward says horticultural crews saved pine cones, seeds and cuttings from some of the trees that were cut down, to grow new seedlings that will eventually be planted in the park. Some tree stumps were also left behind to create habitat for birds and other forest animals.
