Bear killed in Sechelt had been a problem in several neighbourhoods

Conservation Officers say a bear killed in Sechelt on the weekend was one they’ve had concerns about for a while.

Dean Miller of the Conservation Service says the bear had become reliant on human food sources and was also losing its fear of people.

The mature male had been reported in backyards in the Davis Bay and Selma Park areas for the past 4 or 5 weeks, and when it was shot on Saturday it had been trying to break into a house while people were inside.

Miller says with a lot of time still to go before bears start to “den” for the winter they’re urging people to clear up anything on their property that might attract bears – like garbage or unpicked fruit.
