Winter tire and chain-up rules now in place for Malahat, Highway 4

Drivers heading through the Malahat, or over Highway 4 have to follow BC’s winter tire rules.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Mike Lorimer says the province wants to make sure everyone is prepared for driving in the fall and winter.

He says as of October 1st vehicles on certain highways have to have tires with a Mountain Snowflake or Mud and Snow symbol on the sidewall as well as a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm, while truck drivers have to carry chains

Lorimer says fines can be as much as $121 for not following the rules. The same rules also apply to Highways 14 and 28.
