Questions raised about where Colliery Dam Park timber ended up

There were protests when crews started taking down trees to make way for a new spillway in Nanaimo’s Colliery Dam Park, and now some people are questioning what happened with those trees.

They were offered to the Snuneymuxw First Nation as firewood for homes and ceremonial purposes.

When the issue came up at a committee meeting this week, Councillor Gord Fuller noted that a possible alternative way of doing the same thing had been overlooked.

City staff say they had the discretion to make the decision on how to dispose of the felled timber, and chose to offer it to the SFN.
