Smaller crowd, similar concerns for 2nd Sechelt water forum

Work continues on the District of Sechelt’s water conservation plan, but this week’s forum didn’t draw the big crowds that turned up for the one at the height of the recent drought.

But many of the same questions came up, including several around metering.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District’s Dave Crosby was on hand to address those – like concerns that people would be billed for water “leaking” out of the system.  He says the idea is to get the meters installed then use them to help track down and deal with leaks before activating the program

Crosby says communities that have switched to metering generally see water use drop by as much as 40 per cent.

There were also a lot of questions around when and how the District is planning to use water recovered at the sewer treatment plant.

Mayor Bruce Milne says he’s hoping to see many of the concerns around that dealt with at the next forum – October 20th

District staff say they’re still working on getting permits to re-use the water for industry and irrigation, and negotiating with the Lehigh gravel operation, which is likely to be one of the biggest users.

Staff hope to have the conservation plan ready for Council late this month.
