Information and Privacy Commissioner takes health authorities to task

BC’s Information and Privacy Commissioner is making 13 recommendations to health authorities to better protect patient information.

Elizabeth Denham says in an age of electronic records, there are more and more cases of employees “snooping.”

Island Health has seen a few of those cases in the past two years.

But, Denham says it’s also one of the health authorities doing the best job at protecting privacy, and dealing with violations of the rules.

At least three employees have been fired by Island Health as a result of privacy breaches.

Denham says, however, Vancouver Coastal Health is lagging behind, even though they’re one of the biggest health authorities, because they don’t put enough resources into privacy issues.
