Power outages, and road closures as storm batters region

Rain and strong winds Saturday caused the sort of problems people on the Island and Sunshine Coast usually encounter in a winter storm… including power outages and road closures.

Highway 101 remains closed in both directions between Pender Harbour Golf Course and Sakinaw Lake Drive because of downed hydro lines.  Drive BC  says it’s expected to re-open at 6pm.

Downed wires and debris on the roads have also led to lane closures and delays on Highways 19, 19A and 4 on the Island.

BC Hyrdo says it’s having trouble with the website www.bchydro.com, making it hard for people to get information on outages.  If your power is out you can call *HYDRO (49376) on a mobile phone, or 1-888-POWER ON (769-3766).  Hydro says around 400-thousand customers are off the grid and many will likely be without power well into the evening.

Rainfall and wind warnings are up for the Sunshine Coast, but there are none for the Island.
