Idea of a road to Squamish getting new life on Sunshine Coast

It’s not a new idea, but some people on the Sunshine Coast say the time may be here to take a road linking Gibsons and Squamish seriously.

Ryan Medd is one of the people behind the blog “West Howe Sound Road”.

He says frustration with BC Ferries is one of their motivations, and he thinks trying to reform the ferry service is a lost cause. “From what I’ve observed in the last couple of years I don’t think we’re going to get what we want from BC Ferries,” he says. “Just from a purely economic standpoint we’re not going to get what we want, because it’s just not possible to do it. We can’t get better service and lower fares.”

Medd says they know a road would be costly, but he says if it was done as a “P-3”, or public, private partnership, with tolls it could work.  He also says the idea of a bridge is also worth considering, but they think the road is likely the most practical.

The bottom line, according to Medd is for residents to have, “Sunshine Coast access; on our terms.”

An informal poll the group did earlier this month got more than 400 responses, and 85 per cent were in favour.
