Gibsons resident questions need for Stage 4 in areas on aquifer water

The Town of Gibsons says everyone is on Stage 4 water restrictions to be fair, minimize confusion, and promote conservation – even though much of the Town has a healthy supply.

But at least one resident isn’t buying that argument.

Only one of Gibsons’ three water zones is fed by the SCRD, where Chapman Lake is nearing zero capacity.

The rest get water from the aquifer, and Audrey Owen says they should go back to normal rules.

“Why? It’s not helping anybody,” she says. “My being on Stage 4 doesn’t help anyone in the universe at all. Not only was I on Stage 4, but I and all my neighbours were doing insane things (to follow the watering ban).”

Owen says as well as going to unnecessary extremes, people are risking injury by hauling buckets to keep valuable plants alive.

She also says she’s starting to worry about the impact on the local economy, “There is a significant loss of enjoyment of our personal property. The three local nurseries that serve us are all but closed due to lack of business. Landscapers are not being hired as they would otherwise be.”

Owen is circulating a flyer in Zones 1 and 2, and she’s planning to take her case to Gibsons Council next Tuesday (Sept. 1)
