Nanaimo RCMP warning residents after 119 break-ins in 2 months

Nanaimo RCMP are reminding residents to lock their doors and windows to deter thieves after a spike in break-ins.

Constable Gary O’Brien says, so far, there have been 119 residential break-ins reported in July and August.

Thieves seem to be targeting the Departure Bay and Norwell Drive area, lower Hammond Bay Rd, and parts of Lantzville, Cedar and Cinnabar. Most of the break-ins are happening in broad daylight, between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.

“Thieves will enter through the point of least resistance, which are doors and windows. It can take a thief less than five minutes to break into your home and steal your prized possessions. It takes less for you to ensure they are locked,” said O’Brien.

O’Brien says residents need to report all thefts and break-ins, no matter how small, so they can track where they’re occurring. He says people also need to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.
