VICCS says drought highlights need for joint governance on watersheds

The Vancouver Island and Coast Conservation Society wants to bridge the gap between the Regional District of Nanaimo and Cowichan Valley Regional District, at least when it comes to water.

President Laurie Gourlay says the drought shows the need to work together to make sure there’s enough water to go around. “Our suggestion is, it’s a shared landscape divided by a straight line boundary and we should be looking at the water needs across that shared landscape so that we can made sure everybody’s got enough water.”

Gourlay says the Society has a proposal in front of the province, to have the two regional districts work together on a water governance pilot project.

The Environment Ministry is promising to look at watershed governance issues after they’ve dealt with groundwater legislation in the spring.

He says VICCS will be going to the Nanaimo Area Land Trust and the Nanaimo River Watershed Round Table in September, to get the ball rolling.
