15 little libraries pop up across Nanaimo

An informal group of Nanaimo residents is trying to infuse a little more fun into the city, and their latest project is getting some great feedback.

Play Nanaimo is responsible for the piano in Diana Krall Plaza, which first appeared  last summer, along with the one by the waterfront.

They recently installed 15 little libraries in neighbourhoods across Nanaimo.

Social planner John Horn is part of the group. He says there were already a few well-established little libraries in Nanaimo.

He says they placed an advertisement in Trash Talk, the City’s sanitation newsletter, looking for places to install the little libraries, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Horn says they partnered with Vancouver Island Regional Library and Literacy Central Vancouver Island to fill the little libraries with books, to encourage people to borrow one or add to the collection. He says the people who volunteered to put a little library on their property are liking the results.

Horn says Play Nanaimo will continue looking for ways to make life more vibrant for residents.
