Second reading vote clears way for public hearing on George

The stage is set for a public hearing on one of the most controversial development proposals in front of Gibsons Council.

At its final meeting before the August break Council passed second reading on bylaws for the George Hotel, after getting a look at some proposed design changes.

The main one is to raise the building a bit more above ground level, which would also mean the public plaza would be elevated.

Mayor Wayne Rowe says the changes reflect a couple of important points.

Local businessman Scott Russell was there with a petition collected by a group backing the development.

He says the 1,051 signatures show broad support for the project, especially in light of recent economic blows.

There’s still no firm date for the public hearing – it will be in either September or October, depending on when Town staff can finalize details for an agreement on things like community amenities and affordable housing.
