Nanaimo RCMP constable pleads guilt on assault charge, sentencing still to come

A Nanaimo RCMP officer has pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

Constable Tim Bedard was charged in connection with an incident in the cells at the Nanaimo detachment in June of 2014. The Criminal Justice Branch announced in February it was going ahead with a prosecution after a probe by the Independent Investigations Office.

Bedard has been on administrative duties while his case worked its way through the courts.

He’ll be back in court August 15th to set a date for sentencing. The crime carries a possible jail term, but the Crown has suggested a suspended sentence. Bedard’s defence wants a conditional discharge.
