WestJet adds another Alberta destination from YCD

Nanaimo Airport is getting more flights to Alberta.

WestJet says it’s going to start service to Edmonton in December.

It already flies to Calgary, and earlier this spring Air Canada also started offering Calgary flights.

Airport CEO Mike Hooper says they hope news like this, and rising passenger numbers, will tilt things in their favour for a federal grant they need for an 11 million dollar expansion plan.

Hooper says despite what some might think, the downturn in Alberta’s oil and gas sector isn’t having much effect at the airport.

He says one thing they have seen is a shift to workers from the Island using scheduled flights instead of company charters.
