Area food banks see a seasonal shift in users, but not the need for donations

Area food banks are noticing a shift in who relies on their services over the summer.

Dale Sankey with the Sunshine Coast Food Bank says they typically see more families coming in, because kids aren’t in school and can’t take advantage of meal programs.

Peter Sinclair with Loaves and Fishes in Nanaimo says demand typically drops over the summer, but it fluctuates.

Both food banks, however, say the need for donations is one thing that doesn’t change in the summer.  In fact, donations often slow down and they’re encouraging people with backyard gardens to “grow a row for the food bank”, and donate fresh fruits and vegetables.
