ICE-T comes to the table with $400K for Gibsons Public Market

The Gibsons Public Market project is getting a major grant.

The Island Coastal Economic Trust has announced 400-thousand dollars for the Gibsons Community Building Society.

Since taking ownership of the old yacht club the Society has made it home to a successful weekly farmers market, and dozens of community events

But the ultimate goal is to create a year-round, Granville Island style indoor market.

The Society launched a capital campaign June 27th, looking to raise just under 3 million dollars.

Executive Director Gerry Zipursky says they also want to establish a Marine Education Centre, modeled on the aquarium in Ucluelet.

Zipursky says the good news about the ICE-T grant has been overshadowed somewhat by the shock and sorrow over the recent death of one of the Society’s founders – Nicholas Sonntag.

Tributes to Sonntag poured in at last weekend’s gala launch for the new capital campaign.
