$6 million committed to Parksville water treatment plant by federal and provincial govt

A major funding commitment from the federal and provincial governments to help build a new water treatment plant in Parksville.

A total of $6 million dollars was announced today to help Parksville and the Regional District of Nanaimo build a treatment plant along the Englishman River.

Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan says the $3 million from the federal government’s Small Communities Fund is part of $42 million being distributed among 21 projects in the province, 11 of which are related to drinking water.

Mayor Marc Lefebvre says they currently only take water from the river three months out of the year.

Lefebvre says Parksville will need to hold a referendum to see whether residents support borrowing the final $5.5 million needed to make the project a reality.
