Records broken across region, heat continues, risk of lightning worries Fire Centre

Environment Canada says the heat will continue, with temperatures into the 30s again by the weekend.

Nanaimo and Sechelt were among the nearly 40 BC locations that set new records on Saturday.

Nanaimo hit 33.3 degrees, topping a record of 31.7 set in 1892. Sechelt’s high was 30.6, about a degree higher than the record set in 2000.

Sechelt also posted a record high on Friday (28.6), and tied the record high Sunday (29.6)

The ongoing heat, and the drought conditions, continue to worry firefighters.

Danger ratings are now at extreme from Nanaimo, south on the Island and high throughout the Sunshine Coast.

And, Fire Information Officer Marg Drysdale of the Coastal Fire Centre says they’re still concerned about lightning in the coming days.

Drysdale says there were no new fires over the weekend, and she says the “0” in the person-caused fire column is especially good news, and shows people are respecting the various burning bans in the region.

The Ladysmith FD, though, is reminding people about another major hazard.  They say they had to deal with a fire in bark mulch along the Trans Canada Sunday, which they suspect was caused by a carelessly tossed cigarette butt.
