Simons: Land use plans key to cumulative effects assessments

The government is promising to improve and expand cumulative effects assessments in the wake of a critical report from the Auditor General.

The assessments look at the broad impact of several resource projects in the same region.

But, Powell River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons says the one for Howe Sound is exposing a big weakness.

Only part of the Sound is covered by a land use plan, because the province never approved one for the Sunshine Coast (the governments says about 90% of BC is covered by such a plan)

A land use plan for the whole Sound is one of the goals of the Future of Howe Sound Society, which also pushed for the cumulative effects assessment.
