RCMP say Courtenay fire was a drug lab accident

RCMP are now saying a mishap at an illegal drug lab caused a fire and explosion at a Courtenay home Friday.

Witnesses reported three men running out of the home, then driving off. They later turned up at a local hospital suffering from very serious injuries.

Comox Valley RCMP Constable Don Sinclair says once the building was declared safe enough investigators went in and did a thorough search.

The three men, aged 25, 28 and 29, have not been charged at this point, although Sinclair says one of them confirmed to police they’d been producing hash oil.

“This is a tragic reminder of the serious risks involved in the production of illegal drugs”, adds Sinclair. “We cannot stress enough to anyone considering this sort of activity to think of the pain and anguish these three men and their families now face, and reconsider their plans.”
