Island Health working on technology to help prevent dementia patients from wandering

Island Health is working on helping people with dementia, and their caregivers, through a partnership with the University of Victoria’s CanAssist program and Centre on Aging.

Cheryl Beach is Island Health’s Director of Community Care Initiatives. She says they want to use technology to help address a common problem.

Beach says they’re working on using a tablet to play a recorded video message telling the person it’s nighttime, and asking them to go back to bed.

They’re calling it the Wandering Deterrent System. Beach says it’s still early in the project but they’re looking for clients to help test it.

About 40 per cent of Island Health’s Home and Community Care clients have been diagnosed with dementia.
