Nanaimo Council: Hilton park lease dropped, budget passes 3 readings

The City of Nanaimo’s 2015 budget passed three readings last night, but not without some Councillors expressing serious concerns.

The tax increase is being held to 1 per cent.

And Councillor Ian Thorpe said he’s worried about some of the things they left out to make that possible.

Despite the concerns all Councillors, except Bill Bestwick, voted in favour of the first three readings.

Also at Council last night:

Word the developers of a Hilton Hotel have modified the design, so they don’t need to lease part of Georgia Park, got a positive reception.

Plans for a restaurant and a loading dock that would have encroached on the park have been changed.

So, last night Council was able to rescind the approval it had offered, at least in principal, for the lease.

Councillor Wendy Pratt calls it a win-win situation.

The park lease would have required public approval, and was a contentious issue during the election.
