ARSBC planning to sink former HMCS Annapolis on Saturday

The former HMCS Annapolis will be sent to her final resting place today, as long as the weather cooperates.

The Artificial Reef Society of BC is sinking the decommissioned warship in Halkett Bay off Gambier Island, after a lengthy legal battle with opponents.

Rick Wall with the ARSBC says they’re glad it’s going ahead, and they’ve put a lot of work into cleaning and preparing the ship. He says it’ll serve several purposes below the surface.

Wall says they would have liked to send the Annapolis to the bottom with a little more pomp and circumstance, but because the project was delayed, they’re keen to see it through as quickly as possible.

Wall says sinking it won’t take long now.

Wall says as soon as safety divers are able to go down on Sunday and make sure the charges are gone, recreational divers will be able to explore the ship.

The ARSBC is the same group that created artificial reefs off Chemainus, Salt Spring Island and Nanaimo.
